No screwdriver in my backpack

Blog

"Well, phooey. I don't have a phillips-head screwdriver in my bag."

"That's normal."

"It is?"

"Yes."

"Not to have a screwdriver in your backpack?"

"Yes."

"Oh."

Ah, yes, ultimate

I went out to play ultimate tonight. I have to say, it was an adventure and a half. I had forgotten so many things that suck about ultimate, and remembered only enough of the good things to head out, and, yeah. Hello, injuries! I had fallen down the stairs at home last week, and was uncertain if my shoulder would be okay. With my achilles tendonitis from last season, I knew I'd be risking more injury. My knees have *knock on wood* been feeling pretty much okay. I'm way out of shape, which is depressing when I remember what I used to be able to do. I'm also slow, and it was cold so I risked hand bruises and... and... and...

And sometimes you just have to f---ing get out on the field and play. Sometimes the joy of movement outweighs the heft of the mind telling us "too cold, too old, too slow, too hurt," and you just have to play.

More than just a salary

It's close enough to summer that, well, I have an intern at work. I don't know that I should really *say* "I have an intern," but this particular college-aged guy working for the team for the summer was instructed to ask me questions when he had them, and I kept asking him if he was stuck, and helping him become unstuck, that, well, he comes to me and I drop everything to answer his questions, so that means that not only have I written a stunningly long run-on sentence, but also I have an intern and he has a mentor.

Which is great. He inspires me with his enthusiasm, and I help him work-wise now, and hopefully career-wise long term. I find this awesome.

Today, he was working on a new feature and was uncertain about his test cases. Did he write enough? Was everything covered? Do the tests go into different files? How do you know what is enough?

Ooooof.

Yes.

I think I've decided on the n, x and t

Blog

Okay, after pondering it for a bit (hello, overnight) and receiving a few suggestions from friends (looking at you, Chookie, with <3), I have decided my next "n {tasks} in n {time unit, plural}" goal is going to be 7 chapters in 7 days of this next book (as in writing it, not reading it), so that I can finish it, jam a stick in the ground, and say, "Done."

I'm tempted to follow Chookie's suggestion of "7 dinner parties in 7 nights," because that idea is awesome. I would manage to have dinner with 35 friends and new friends in one week and that sounds wonderful. I can't do that this week, since I'd have to find 35 people and plan 7 meals, but I'm really interested in this idea. Might have to try it in 2-3 weeks...

Buy our house.

Buy our house.

Or something like that.

I'm not good at sales. I would like to believe that "not good" part is because I haven't tried. Unsure, though.

Anyway. I just finished the website for 506 Campbell St, Valparaiso, Indiana, 46385. It's currently under renovation and for sale.

The house is my (our) first flip. I will make the bold step and say that it is also my last flip. Some people are good with real estate. Some people are not. Some people are willing to try different things in real estate in order to figure out which group they are in. I'm in that last group, the trying one.

It's a lovely house, though not one I would likely live in because the kitchen doesn't open into the living space. That, and it's in Valparaiso, where I will likely not live again.

It was a fun website to build, though.
