520 days
Blog kitt decided around 17:20 on 21 May 2015 to publish this:521 days ago, I realized I wasn't keeping in touch with either of my parents as much as I wanted to be in touch with them. I wanted to be in contact with them frequently, so that they knew I was thinking about them, that I was hoping they were doing well, that I love them, and that I was hoping they were healthy and enjoying life.
I had recently started using Habit List on my phone, so I added "Mom" and "Dad" to my daily habit list tracker to start the next day. My goal was to contact Mom and Dad very day for a year. Could we stay in touch daily for a year? Phone calls, emails, texts, visiting, all of these counted as "staying in touch." Sending a text by itself didn't count as staying in touch, they had to respond and engage in a conversation for me to be able to say, "Yes, I contacted each of my parents today."
I didn't let on what I was doing until about 10 months in, when I told Mom how well we had been doing. She didn't realize the streak we had going, but immediately jumped on it. She embraced the idea and switched from being the responder to the initiator on most conversations. We made it 365 days, and have kept it up longer, even through some difficult-communication travel days when she didn't have cell service (used my aunt's phone or emailed) or I was travelling with very strange hours (hello, New Zealand).
We are currently at 520 days in a row we have communicated with each. I love this.
Dad and I have missed 6 days in those 520 days that Mom and I have managed. Dad's phone completely died, so we lost a day there. I forgot to text one Wednesday, inventory day for Dad, and he was too busy to notice, so we missed that one. We were talking a couple months ago about how we had managed to miss each other only 2 times in the first year, and he was stunned. "I knew we were chatting a lot, I didn't realize how much, though!"
I think this is great. I'm very happy I have the opportunity to connect with my parents this way, that we are able technology-wise to communicate daily in non-stressful ways, that we are able to support each other even from long distances, and that we have the relationships where we want to do this. I am grateful for the years, and hope they know how much I love them.
Maybe 520 daily reminders in a row will show a small dent in how much.

Ah, yes, ultimate
Blog Written with a loving hand by kitt some time around 21:10 on 20 May 2015I went out to play ultimate tonight. I have to say, it was an adventure and a half. I had forgotten so many things that suck about ultimate, and remembered only enough of the good things to head out, and, yeah. Hello, injuries! I had fallen down the stairs at home last week, and was uncertain if my shoulder would be okay. With my achilles tendonitis from last season, I knew I'd be risking more injury. My knees have *knock on wood* been feeling pretty much okay. I'm way out of shape, which is depressing when I remember what I used to be able to do. I'm also slow, and it was cold so I risked hand bruises and... and... and...
And sometimes you just have to f---ing get out on the field and play. Sometimes the joy of movement outweighs the heft of the mind telling us "too cold, too old, too slow, too hurt," and you just have to play.
I arrived tonight on the fields with Mo, and the first thing I did was pull out my new cleats and a scissors I had brought with me. Four cuts later, I had cleats I was willing to try:
No way was I going to have achilles problems from poorly fitting shoes. No. Way. Downside of these new (pretty cheap) cleats is that the shoe laces are short!
The wind was bad. The team we were playing against knew me and, well, let's just say they don't like me (rant begins! They asked me last time we played against them, not to stand on the far sideline because they were worried my team would pass to me as I stood out of bounds. I declined to move back to the home side line where both teams were. They they asked me to remove my shirt, because it distracted them. I declined. WTF is this complete and utter bullshit? I mean, COME ON. It's the game. Just asking me to stand on the other side or remove my jersey is stunningly stupid. If my team throws to me, IT IS A TURN OVER, and you get the disc, why would you want to lose that "advantage." Then they asked me to stop calling out to my team. THAT IS WHAT TEAMMATES DO. They help their teammates on the field. To ask me not to help them WITHOUT BREAKING ANY RULES is unspirited on their part. When I kept declining to give into their infantile demands, they complained to the team captain. "She's not allowed to make calls on the sideline." My captain: "She's not." Them, "Well, she's really loud." Kevin, my captain, "She's allowed to do that." Them, "Well, she's not allowed to make calls." Kevin, "She's not." As far as I was concerned, if they are that focused on me, we're going to win the game, because they are no longer focused on playing the team. Take off your shirt. What a fucking stupid demand, ESPECIALLY to a woman who has had skin cancer. rant ends!).
The other team was experienced and we have a bunch of beginners, so it was going to be rough. I was uncertain on my physical health (ankles, feet, toes, achilles, shoulder, neck, back, quads), and well, I did not have a good time when we started. The wind (have I mentioned the wind?) was strong and the sun was blinding. I was alone on the far sideline trying to cheer on my team, without yelling at the offence (a new rule about coaching that I picked up this past Christmas break). I was cold, and uncertain to go in.
I went in a few times as the team settled into a routine. What position did I want to play? Cutter. Who were the handlers? Matt and Kevin and someone else. The opponents played zone a lot. The handlers shook out and we had a Matt show up who clearly knows how to play. We were down 8-2 at half (and, quite honestly, I was thrilled we had two points), and all I really wanted the team to do was punt the disc away from our endzone to give us a chance to play defence. With the wind, we had a chance.
I was still having a rough time when I saw Matt, who had come out early in the game with a sprained ankle, trying to warm up and test out his ankle. He's coming off an injury, wanting to get back on the field, and here I was just curled inside myself, grumbling how miserable I was and how no one was cutting deep for a punt-and-play-D style of play.
Well, shit, I can fix both of those.
I'd been playing poorly enough so far that the opponents had put their worst woman on me. Okay then, long cuts it is. When Matt-who-could-play picked up the disc on a pull, I cut deep. The throw was short, but we were close to our endzone. They turned the disc half way up the field, I cut deep. Throw was wide, but we were close to our endzone. They turned the disc most of the way up the field. I cut deep. Yes, repeat. I was exhausted at the end of the point, and finally FINALLY the cobwebs were cleared. I could run again.
So I did.
And cut in instead of deep, receiving a leading pass, made an beautiful cross field pass to a wide open female teammate who just HAD to be rewarded for such a gorgeous cut. I turned to run upfield as my teammates and our opponents collapsed on her (I was reminded of Bridget at that moment, when she first started playing, and we wouldn't give her space to throw, just collapsed on her, and how things haven't changed), and there was a turn, but it happens.
The rest of the game was way more fun. We went on a 5-0 point run, though still ended up losing 15-9 (I think, we may have had more than 9, unsure). It turned out to be a fun game, a great evening, and a huge inspiration for more sprint training. I know the effort required to be back to the physical condition to be able to run without dying on the field. I'm finally to the point that I'm willing to put in the work to get that result.

Oh, oh, oh! Almost forgot! There was a kids league going on next to us, one field over. I went to talk to one of the parents. His daughter was learning how to play. I told him I was very happy to see kids out playing. He said he didn't know much about sport, only that his neighbor's kid plays. I told him it was the best sport ever, and that you could go anywhere in the world and have instant friends. He seemed happier his kid was learning. There were like 40 kids out, maybe 7-12 years old. Some had seriously good throws. It was awesome to see.
More than just a salary
Blog Instead of being asleep at 11:17 on 20 May 2015, kitt created this:It's close enough to summer that, well, I have an intern at work. I don't know that I should really *say* "I have an intern," but this particular college-aged guy working for the team for the summer was instructed to ask me questions when he had them, and I kept asking him if he was stuck, and helping him become unstuck, that, well, he comes to me and I drop everything to answer his questions, so that means that not only have I written a stunningly long run-on sentence, but also I have an intern and he has a mentor.
Which is great. He inspires me with his enthusiasm, and I help him work-wise now, and hopefully career-wise long term. I find this awesome.
Today, he was working on a new feature and was uncertain about his test cases. Did he write enough? Was everything covered? Do the tests go into different files? How do you know what is enough?
Ooooof.
Yes.
Tests should give you and everyone else behind you, including your future self, confidence that your current code works and future code breaks will surface. Knowing how much is enough and what parts to cover, that's a programmer's adventure! Having recently spent time developing my testing fu, I had a few pointers, one of which was watching Sandi Metz's Rails Conf 2013 talk: The Magic Tricks of Testing.
He asked, "at home or now?"
My response was an enthusiastic, "!!! during work hours! It's for work!"
One thing that is really hard, I think, for new developers or developers in new groups or new jobs, is to understand that you don't know everything, that is okay to ask for help, and that, IT IS OKAY TO LEARN ON THE JOB. So many times, we think, Oh, I'll learn this after hours and come back into work and apply this knowledge, and forget that work is paying for our brain time. We don't have to always be producing output. Instead, we can be sponging knowledge. If we need to learn something in order to do our job, it is okay that work pay for that time to learn.
His response, "it’s 35 minutes lol that’s $$$"
I wanted to cry for him and my 21 year old self, who once thought the same.
My response: "the company pays for your learning. 35 minutes is nothing compared to broken code. or time wasted writing the wrong tests.
"Really, it's okay to spend work time learning. You don't have to come in knowing everything.
"Promise."
He ended up watching the video at work, and learning.
I hope he embraces the learning part, and having work pay for that learning. Work is a give and take between employer and employee. That means the work has to give as well as take, and that give means more than just a salary sometimes.
I think I've decided on the n, x and t
Blog kitt decided around 09:44 on 18 May 2015 to publish this:Okay, after pondering it for a bit (hello, overnight) and receiving a few suggestions from friends (looking at you, Chookie, with <3), I have decided my next "n {tasks} in n {time unit, plural}" goal is going to be 7 chapters in 7 days of this next book (as in writing it, not reading it), so that I can finish it, jam a stick in the ground, and say, "Done."
I'm tempted to follow Chookie's suggestion of "7 dinner parties in 7 nights," because that idea is awesome. I would manage to have dinner with 35 friends and new friends in one week and that sounds wonderful. I can't do that this week, since I'd have to find 35 people and plan 7 meals, but I'm really interested in this idea. Might have to try it in 2-3 weeks...
